Smt. Girija Subramanian is a distinguished insurance professional with over three decades of experience in the Indian insurance sector. She began her career as a Direct Recruit Officer in GIC Re in 1988 and went on to build a wide-ranging career across reinsurance, agriculture insurance, general insurance, institutional leadership, governance and market development.

She served as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd., where she led an institution central to India’s agriculture risk-protection ecosystem. She was subsequently appointed Chairman-cum-Managing Director of The New India Assurance Co. Ltd., India’s largest public-sector general insurance company.
At New India Assurance, Smt. Girija Subramanian has been a change agent, guiding the organisation through a period of significant sectoral transformation. She has envisioned New India’s role as the country’s largest general insurer as one that extends beyond business growth, towards contributing meaningfully to the Government’s financial inclusion agenda and the regulator’s vision of “Insurance for All by 2047.”

Under her leadership, New India has begun to place renewed strategic focus on retail business, with corresponding efforts towards strengthening distribution, customer accessibility, technology adoption, operational infrastructure and product relevance. This shift reflects a long-term view of making insurance more accessible, inclusive and responsive to the needs of households, MSMEs, enterprises and emerging customer segments.

Her career reflects a deep commitment to the developmental role of insurance as a social and economic stabiliser. Across her leadership roles, she has worked with public institutions, industry stakeholders and insurance professionals to widen protection, build trust, improve resilience and ensure that insurance remains relevant in a changing risk environment.

She has also been appointed as Whole-Time Member (Distribution), Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, reflecting her continued contribution to the development of India’s insurance sector.
