The School of Risk Management (SRM) has a rich history and tradition. Initially organized in 1901 as the Insurance Society of New York, later known as the School of Insurance in 1947 and then as the College of Insurance in 1962, the School of Risk Management evolved from the merger of the College of Insurance and St. John's University in 2001. The academic programs of the School of Risk Management are located at 101 Astor Place in Manhattan.
The School of Risk Management is a global leader in risk and insurance education, research and training. SRM draws candidates from all regions of the world. All of the degree programs offered by the Tobin College of Business – thus by the School of Risk Management – are fully accredited by the AACSB International (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Bachelors and masters degrees are offered in insurance and actuarial science. A master’s degree is also offered in enterprise risk management. The actuarial science program is recognized by the Society of Actuaries as a Center of Actuarial Excellent.
The School of Risk Management is home to the Davis Library, which holds the largest collection of risk management and insurance materials in the world, and the Ellen Thrower Center for Apprenticeship and Career Services. The school yearly awards the Berkley Fellowship to select scholars to underwrite the costs of pursuing scholarly research in insurance on its campus in New York City. The school also awards the ILOTY Fellowship to outstanding master’s degree students to fully fund their tuition costs. Through the generosity of the insurance industry, most of the students studying in the School of Risk Management, whether for a bachelor’s or master’s degree, receive substantial financial aid.
