Derek J. Houle
Head of Canadian Legacy and Inforce ManagementManulife
As Head of Canadian Legacy and Inforce Management, Derek’s mandate is to optimize the financial performance of Manulife’s older Insurance and Annuity blocks of business. He’s responsible for organic and inorganic activities that generate net income, free capital and ultimately improves overall company Return on Equity. Derek is a member of the Canadian Division Leadership Team (CDLT) and the Global Leadership Team (GLT).
Prior to joining the Canadian Legacy team, Derek worked in Corporate Development, where he led several sell-side initiatives related to North American Legacy business. He’s led several projects to reinsure business, working across the business units and functional areas on potential transactions. He was heavily involved in the Canadian purchase and integration of the Standard Life business.
Derek’s experience with Manulife’s Canadian businesses and its central finance team have given him substantial perspective that he applies in his current position. At various points, he has served as the Chief Actuary for Manulife’s Canadian Division, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the Individual Insurance organization, and the head of the Individual Insurance Pricing team.
Before he joined Manulife, Derek worked at KPMG in Chicago where he was involved in audits and M&A work for large multinational insurers.
Derek holds a Bachelor of Mathematics (BMath) degree from The University of Waterloo. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.
