The risk management and insurance (RMI) degree programs at the Wisconsin School of Business (WSB) prepare students to identify, analyze, and manage risks that are inherent in the operation of profit and not-for-profit institutions. We offer BBA and MBA degrees in risk management and insurance. We also have a BBA and capstone certificate focused on actuarial science, as well as a Ph.D. that crosses both domains.

Students in all RMI degree programs take courses designed to provide practical knowledge and skill-focused training that meet individual interests and employer needs. Current course offerings align with our faculty research strength and support WSB initiatives in analytics and navigating uncertainty. We offer both foundational courses, such as Principals of Risk Management, and in-depth courses, such as Risk Financing, Risk Analytics and Behavioral Science, Commercial Insurance Contracts, Insurance Operations, Employee Benefits Management, and Sustainability Risk Management.

Our faculty is thought leaders with a variety of interests, including: risk management, risk evaluation, insurance regulation, insurance company financial operations, enterprise risk management, behavioral economics, and reputation risk. The strength and breadth of our faculty research enhances the student experience by giving students first-hand access to industry experts that match their interests.

Outside of the classroom, students have ample opportunities to build their industry-specific skills and knowledge and gain career guidance:
• The Risk Management and Insurance Society, a student-run organization that hosts professional presentations, community service, and social events.
• An annual Risk & Insurance Career Fair with 35+ companies specifically recruiting RMI students for internships and full-time positions (prep sessions also offered).
• National and regional professional meetings, including RIMS, CPCU, and others, where students and faculty interact with alumni and other industry leaders.
• Co-Curricular Learning Board (CCLB) events, including industry-focused skill development activities. Examples include case competitions, the GenRe PRIME insurance simulation, and insight and mentorship panels with professionals.
• Applied project courses in which BBA students work as analysts under the direction of MBA students on a semester-long consulting project. Recent sponsoring organizations include UW-Madison Risk Management, United/Continental Airlines, Trek Bicycle, and Willis Towers Watson.
Producing stellar graduates since 1938, the WSB program in RMI has a rich alumni base, ready to support the career development of current students in their industry.
