The University of St. Gallen is one of the leading business school in Europe and is also globally recognized as leading in the fields of strategy, finance, and insurance. The current insurance teaching portfolio consists of 22 classes, 14 of which are on the master level, 5 on the bachelor level, and 3 on the PhD level. The strategy of the University of St. Gallen is to have very broad programs (e.g., “Bachelor in Business”, “Master in Finance”) so that – although offering one of the largest insurance teaching portfolios in Europe – we yet do not have an own master program. Most of the insurance classes are part of the financial institutions track of the Master in Banking and Finance, which is consistently ranked as one of the top finance master programs worldwide (2016: number 8 in the Financial Times ranking).
Moreover, the University of St. Gallen is very active in executive education. In collaboration with the Vlerick Business School, we provide an Executive MBA Financial Services and Insurance (60 ECTS). Moreover, we completely deliver the HSG Diploma Program Insurance Management (30 ECTS) and several smaller programs, leading to one of the world’s largest teaching portfolio in executive education for insurance companies. Also in-house seminars for several leading insurance companies are done on a regular basis.
All insurance teaching is embedded in a network of more than 40 collaborating insurance companies with a regular exchange such as joint studies, guest lectures and insurance career programs. The Institute of Insurance Economics at the University of St. Gallen has two full professors with chairs in insurance and risk management (Martin Eling, Hato Schmeiser), two associate professors (Peter Maas, Walter Ackermann) and several other faculty both from academia and from the industry. Currently 21 PhD students are writing their PhD thesis at the Institute of Insurance Economics.
The teaching portfolio of the Institute of Insurance Economics received several prices and grants for innovation in teaching. In particular, we mention the Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award 2016 by the American Risk and Insurance Association for our faculty and students for the Educational Smartphone App "Optimal Insurance Demand for Students”, the 2015 University Grant for Innovation in Teaching for Martin Eling and again the Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award 2014 for Alexander Braun and his new student’s program “Insurance-Linked Securities.”
